Werner, Jane. “Cinderella.” Fantasyland. New York: Golden, 1965. 191-213. Print.
· Author: Jane Werner (adapted version)
· Picture Book
· Publication Date: 1965
· Genre: Fairy-tale
· Age Range: 4-8 years old
· Awards Won: none
This by far is one of the most popular versions of Cinderella found in America. Many Americans at one point have heard, read, or even seen this version due to the fact that it is the one presented by Disney. Similar to Brown’s version (mentioned previously) it contains all of the necessary elements for it to be considered a classic “Cinderella” story. One of the key differences though can be seen in the illustrations that accompany each of these versions. The ones found in Brown’s story are more abstract and unusual for children’s literature today. However, this version contains illustrations that closely resemble those found in the Disney movie creating a feeling of familiarity and comfort as well within the reader. This is perfect for someone who simply wishes to read the most popular version of Cinderella in our culture today. However, it would not serve as a substitute for someone who wants to read the original Cinderella (some details that are included in Perrault’s story are eliminated in this version).
