Huck, Charlotte S.. Princess Furball. New York: Greenwillow, 1989. Print.
· Authors: Charlotte S. Huck and Anita Lobel
· Picture Book
· Publication Date: 1989
· Genre: fairy-tale, adventure
· Age Range: 4-8 years old
· Awards: None
While this version, based on the English “Catskin” and Grimm’s “Many Furs” stories, contains most of the necessary elements to be categorized as a Cinderella, it also has elements that are in stark contrast to the other versions. For example, most Cinderella stories involve abuse (whether that be emotional, physical, or both) from the step-mother and step-sisters, this story does not. Instead it has a father that is forcing the Princess to marry a wealthy ogre and when she refuses she decides to run away, only to be captured by the king and abused by the king’s cook. After three times of sneaking out and dressing up to see the king, the king finally discovers who she really is and decides to marry her. This is a great read for anyone who wishes to learn about different cultures and heritages through the Cinderella stories. Both children and adults alike are sure to find this book intriguing and overall enjoyable.
